Runner
I didn’t start running because I loved running.
I started because something needed to change.

The turning point
The horse that changed my life.
The day after I got married, my wife and I wanted to ride horses on the beach. The man running the experience asked how much I weighed.
“About 275.”
He looked at me and told me I wasn’t getting on his horses. I was embarrassed. I still remember how that felt, and how badly I wanted something to change.
I made myself a promise. In 2020, I committed to running every day. That decision changed much more than my body. It changed what I believed I was capable of.
Running gave me a rule for life.
There were days I was tired, busy, or looking for a reason to put it off. I kept coming back to the promise I’d made myself.
Do It Anyways.
At first, that meant getting out the door. Over time, I learned that keeping the promise also meant training wisely and making room for rest.
First marathon · 2023
My first marathon didn’t go to plan.
My first marathon came with snow, flooded sections of trail, cold feet, and plenty of reasons to stop.
It wasn’t the race I’d pictured, but I still wanted to finish.
I kept going, and I finished.
I had to learn how to train.
For years, I thought getting better meant running harder. Then I learned how to actually train.
Easy runs became easy. Long runs built endurance. Intervals built speed. Recovery had a purpose.
My 5K eventually improved from roughly 33 minutes to 22 minutes and change.
Working harder and working effectively are not the same thing.
That lesson became part of Kouri.
I want runners to understand what they’re doing and why. I’m building the coaching platform I wanted when I was trying to figure that out.
